Small Town Fall: Autumn Weekend Getaways Start Here

Weekend getaways start in Asheboro, Seagrove, and destinations all across Randolph County. The weather is cooling down, the leaves are changing, and the fall events are kicking off. Join us for fall festivals, leaf peeping, outdoor activities and hikes, pumpkin patches, apple picking and spooky attractions.

 

 

Fall Festivals

With the fall season of course comes fall festivals. With a multitude of festivals throughout the county, there is always some fun to be had.

Fall Festival Street Crowd - Asheboro

The 50th Annual Asheboro Fall Festival will be held over two days on October 4th and 5th. Saturday October 4th, will see the return of all the things you know and love: Crafts, food vendors, family fun, and more. Sunday, October 5th will see the revival of the performing arts at the Fall Festival! Live music, theater, dance, poetry, and guest speakers will pack every building in Downtown Asheboro and beyond.

Located at the Linbrook Heritage Estate, the 12th Annual Steam Day offers a unique day exploring over 100 year old history of steam engines and tractors as well as a young entrepreneur market, live demonstrations and music, food and other great family fun. 

The North Carolina Food Truck State Championship is a judged food truck competition held in Randleman, and includes live musical entertainment, activities, and food! The afternoon gets fierce as the food trucks enter competition in a variety of categories, competing for trophies and prize money along with bragging rights as the best of North Carolina.

Downtown Seagrove welcomes the return of Southern Randolph Country Days, September 19th-20th, bringing together community members, local businesses, musicians, food vendors, crafters and more.

Pumpkin Patches

From real pumpkin patches to pottery pumpkins, the Heart of NC has got it all. Visit a multitude of pumpkin patches with the whole family. From Whitaker Farms in Climax, Millstone Creek Orchards in Ramseur, and Kersey Valley Maize Adventure in Archdale there is an outdoor pumpkin adventure awaiting you.

Whitaker Farms during their Fall Vendors Market in September, offer 40 unique vendors showcasing a variety of goods as well as pumpkins and mums market day and beyond. At Millstone Creek Orchards, their Pumpkins, Petals & Pasture Pals Adventure gives a choice from classic orange, snowy white, sunny yellow, and pale green pumpkins of every shape and size. At Kersey Valley Maize Adventure choose from basketball-sized and large pumpkins–perfect for carving and painting. The Pumpkin House is another favorite, with the walls and roof made out of pumpkins. You’ll find several photo ops in the pumpkin patch.

Maybe you're looking for a forever pumpkin. The Potters Pumpkin Patch in Seagrove offers just that. Five of our talented women potters share their pottery pumpkins, gourds and even a few cute ghosts along with refreshments and spooky good fun, starting Sept. 20 and Saturdays in October

Seagrove Pottery Weekend

November 21st-23rd, the weekend before Thanksgiving, is the largest pottery weekend of the year in Seagrove. Seagrove bustles as it showcases two pottery events.

 

The Celebration of Seagrove Potters Show and Studio Tour features more than 50 pottery studios and shops; it’s the only event devoted exclusively to potters from Seagrove and is the only time pottery enthusiasts can visit several Seagrove potters in the same location. At the ticketed show, guests can see live pottery demonstrations, walk the aisles, browse and buy work from 28 Seagrove pottery shops. The show and Friday night gala are held at the newly renovated Luck Comer Lail Center (Historic Luck’s Cannery), located at 798 NC Hwy 705 E in Seagrove. A free studio tour of 29 pottery shops is offered during the event, as well. Pick up maps at the Center. 

  • Saturday/Sunday show tickets are $8. 
  • Gala tickets for Friday evening are $65 and include a catered reception, entertainment, the opportunity to shop early on Friday and bid in the live auction.
  • Saturday/Sunday studio tour is free. 
  • Food trucks on site.

The Seagrove Pottery Festival began in 1981 as a way to showcase the work of local potters under one roof. The festival changed and evolved over the years. It now showcases a few Seagrove potters and includes crafts people and potters from N.C. and nearby states. Held at the Seagrove Elementary School Gym at 528 Old Plank Road, the show also includes demonstrations and food trucks.

  • Saturday and Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM; tickets are $5; military active duty and veterans are free.

Hikes and Outdoor Activities

Pisgah Covered Bridge in fall

Fall is one of the best times of year to be outside. From hiking amongst the changing leaves on the expanding Deep River State Trail or maybe exploring the Uwharrie Mountains outdoor fun is not hard to find. The Pisgah Covered Bridge offers a short scenic trail paired with the history of one of the two remaining covered bridges in North Carolina.

Train at Kersey Valley Attractions during the fall season

There is always fun to be had during the Kersey Valley Maize Adventure. From a pumpkin patch, a train for a tour of the grounds, kiddie ziplines, trampolines, and of course a corn maze you and the whole family will enjoy a day at Kersey Valley.

Fall is an idyllic time to visit the world's largest natural habitat zoo, the North Carolina Zoo. The last two weekends in October, Boo at The Zoo offers your children the chance to wear costumes and trick or treat and participate in themed activities. November 8th and 9th is a smashing good time during pumpkin palooza. Guests can enjoy watching the animals from around the Zoo pound, stomp, crush, and eat pumpkins.

 

Spooky Attractions

What is fall without a little scare? When the sun goes down, it's time to take on not one but two haunted attractions. 

Kersey Valley Attractions has been ranked by national outlets and haunted house professionals for their serious level of scare at the 92-acre Kersey Valley Spookywoods. Always improving and expanding their detailed sets, be prepared to scream and yell.

Just south in Seagrove, Spooky Bottom Haunted Trail and its cast of haunted characters scare all who dare to enter the forest. With over 1 mile of hair-raising cabins, houses, mine shafts, villages and various other attractions set in the most haunting woods. 

 

Apple Picking

Millstone Creek Apple Cider Slushies

What is a small town fall without some apple picking? Located in Ramseur, Millstone Creek Orchards is known for its apple picking, hayrides, pumpkin patch photo sessions, pick-your-own-gourds, story times with children, made-before-your-eyes cider donuts, a robust bakery, and cold, brain-freezing apple slushies. Their apples are harvested, crushed into juice and frozen for the perfect treat. Beverly Mooney is the female force behind this local institution. Millstone Creek has also opened their Cider House featuring hard cider, local snacks, flatbreads, and views of the farm and fishing pond.
