What is your Outdoor Passion

My outdoor passion is walking the Deep River State Trail / Rail Trail. There is a profound sense of peace found in following the same path where the railroad once brought life to our towns and mills, now reclaimed by nature and open for all to explore. This path also crosses the earlier trading paths that brought the first pioneers to our river, and the even earlier paths used by the Native Americans for thousands of years. The trail doesn't just connect points on a map, it connects our past and future as well.

Most over looked area to recreate

The most overlooked area to recreate is the Bush Creek Bridge and the surrounding trails. While many visitors flock to the main trailheads at Riverside Park, this area offers a quiet canopy and a perfect view of the water's edge. It is rarely crowded, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching or finding a moment of solitude. It's also where visitors can branch out to some important historical sites, such as the foundation of the Bush Creek Iron Works, the site of the old rock crusher and quarry, and a trail to the historic Methodist Church graveyard.

What’s your favorite season to recreate in NC

My favorite season to recreate is late autumn. During this off-peak time, the humidity of the Piedmont has mostly drawn down, and the deciduous trees along the riverbank turn brilliant shades of gold and copper. With the leaves falling, you can better see the stone foundations and historic masonry that line the river in numerous places.

What level of experience is needed to recreate in this area

The experience in Franklinville is designed for accessibility. Our Rail Trail is flat and features a wide, crushed-gravel surface that is navigable for most. While not fully ADA compliant in every stretch due to the natural terrain, we have installed sturdy bridges and clear signage at the primary entry points to ensure a smooth transition from the town to the trail.

How long should you plan on visiting the area

You should plan on visiting for at least three to four hours. This allows enough time to walk the trail, explore the historic mill village, and enjoy a slow picnic by the river without feeling rushed. With this amount of time you can also visit some of the areas further from the center of town - such as our ancient Native American fish weir or the mouth of Sandy Creek, site of a Revolutionary War skirmish between the Patriots and the Loyalists.

What sets the area apart from other destinations

What sets Franklinville apart is our commitment to historical stewardship. We don't strive to be just a park; we are a living museum. Our stewardship initiatives focus on "preserving the ruins," ensuring that the stone remains of our industrial past are protected while the surrounding ecosystem thrives. We believe accessibility means more than just a path; it means providing a deep connection to North Carolina’s heritage.

What is unique about the facilities and infrastructure of the area

The infrastructure here is unique because it utilizes the original 19th-century industrial footprint of the town. You will see massive stone retaining walls and iron works integrated directly into the recreational space. It is a seamless blend of heavy industry and soft nature. Our Nationally Recognized Historic District includes over 140 structures, many of which are on or visible from the Deep River State Trail. While the town itself dates to 1847, the oldest building is over 200 years old.

How do you plan ahead and prepare for your recreational activity

To prepare for a visit check the river levels and the local weather. Since we are a river community, the environment can change with the rain. Also make sure to download a digital map of the trail and historic markers so you can identify the buildings and points of interest as you pass them.

What piece of outdoor equipment is your must have

My must-have piece of equipment is a high-quality pair of binoculars. The Deep River is a corridor for migratory birds and bald eagles; having a good lens allows you to appreciate the wildlife without disturbing their habitat. You never know what you're going to see out there on the river.

How do you put one Outdoor NC Leave no trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity

I put the Leave No Trace principle of "Dispose of Waste Properly" into action by participating in the "Pack-It-In, Pack-It-Out" mindset. Before I leave the trail, I always spend a minute scanning the riverbank for any stray litter that may have floated downstream, ensuring the water stays as clean as we can keep it and trail remains pristine for the next visitor.

Favorite place for to visit before or after an outdoor adventure for a meal/coffee/or another beverage

My favorite place for a post-adventure meal is The Franklinville Diner. They are a cornerstone of our community, the best meal in town, and provide a warm atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. It is the perfect spot for a coffee and a bit of local conversation.

Share a unique place to stay in the area. Why would you recommend these accommodations

For a unique place to stay, I recommend the local bed and breakfasts on the reservoir or in the nearby towns. A number of rooms, cabins, or houses are available and each one has a unique story. There are also good places to camp and recreate with the whole family - such as the Deep River Campground and RV Park.

What is your ‘can’t miss experience’ in the area

The "can’t miss experience" is spending the day learning a traditional skill or folk craft at the Deep River Folk School, sharing in one of the legendary Franklinville potluck dinners, and then watching the sun set over the Deep River while fishing from the stone ruins of an antebellum mill. There's nothing quite like it.

Insider tip

Insider tip! The parking lots near the Riverside Park can fill up on warm Saturdays and Sundays, so get there early or use the lots at the other trailheads. Also, keep an eye out for the "Island" area in Cedar Falls; it's the most overlooked picnic place where you can find cool river breezes on a warm afternoon!
