Seagrove, NC - The first Saturday of October has become a much anticipated day of fall fun at Jugtown with lots of great pottery pumpkins available in many shapes, sizes, and colors. The Jugtown potters, Vernon, Pam, Travis, and Bayle Owens, create hundreds of pumpkins for this annual event, which is now in its fifth year.

People have celebrated the Autumn harvest in many ways throughout the centuries. At Jugtown, our pumpkins are not grown in fields; instead, each pumpkin is made by hand, carefully glazed, and fired in our kilns. The result is a harvest of pumpkins that last for years and become part of your family’s Fall traditions. Bayle Owens, who created the first Jugtown pumpkins in 2014, says, “I love the feeling of magic in the air in Fall. The weather is beautiful, the leaves are twirling to the ground, and it’s the perfect time to celebrate the beautiful bounty and forms of nature. Pumpkins at Jugtown has become a way for us, a family of potters, to celebrate our Fall harvest with old and new friends who come visit and choose pumpkins to bring home.”

Pumpkins and gourds will be available in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and colors. We will have small pumpkins with cutouts for candlelight illumination, as well as larger electrified luminary pumpkins. Many pumpkins are in the $24 - $75 range; we will also have lots of larger pumpkins that begin at $100. Make sure to come early for the best selection of pumpkins.

"Pumpkin Day at Jugtown Pottery is an amazing fall event that should not be missed. Pottery pumpkins galore! You can't make a pie with them, and you would never "chunk them" like an old Jack-o'-lantern. But what you get is a beautiful one-of-a-kind handmade prize that's just right for the season -- or any time." -- Stephen C. Compton, author of Jugtown Pottery 1917-2017: A Century of Art and Craft in Clay

Jugtown, a working pottery since 1917, has a wonderful log cabin sales room with pots for the home and garden. Open year-round, Jugtown has a wide range of pieces available including vases, jugs, tableware, birdhouses, garden seats, and serving dishes. Since its origin, Jugtown has also been an American craft shop, carrying handmade goods including rugs, wooden utensils, towels, wooden toys, candles, cards, garden art, and more.

Glaze development has been an important part of the process at Jugtown from the beginning. All of the glazes that we use at Jugtown are our own formulas, which we mix on site. Many of the glazes that we are currently using were developed by Pam Owens. Bobby Owens, who began working at Jugtown in 1960, applies the glaze to most of the pots that we make at Jugtown, including pumpkins. We use a wide range of glazes on our pumpkins, which makes for fun groupings. Glazes include Weathered Bronze, Honey Amber, Black, Dogwood White, Copper Red, Turquoise, Lavender, and several others.

With tables tucked here and there among the pines and cabins, Jugtown is a great place for a picnic. During the Pumpkins at Jugtown event, there will be food, drinks, and music to enjoy on the grounds!

Moore County’s own Momma Molasses will be playing music in the early afternoon. Her music interlaces influences from Folk, Alt-country, Americana, Piedmont Blues, Appalachain, Bluegrass, and Old-Time music into a uniquely timeless sound. Her rolling contralto voice and finger-picked guitar embrace and captivate listeners, soothing well worn hearts with vulnerable lyricism.

Buggy Town Coffee of Carthage, NC will be setup here at Jugtown selling their wonderful coffee, drinks, and sweet treats.
