Seagrove, NC - Michèle Hastings & Jeff Brown Pottery and Eck McCanless Pottery are celebrating their shop anniversaries with a Customer Appreciation Day on July 21.
Both shops will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will do something special to commemorate the day.
Hastings and Brown will demonstrate throwing on the wheel, as well as their signature technique of carving designs on pots through slip. They will offer sweet treats and cool drinks throughout the afternoon.
McCanless will demonstrate how he creates his Agateware and allow customers a chance to get their hands dirty with hands-on demonstrations. He will serve heavy hors d'oeuvres throughout the afternoon.
When the potters realized both shops opened in mid-July, they thought it would be fun to celebrate together. Hastings and Brown relocated their pottery shop from New Hampshire to the charming log cabin surrounded by trees and gardens on the Pottery Highway in July 2010. McCanless spent several years working for his family's shop, Dover Pottery before opening his shop in the quaint little white house with the split rail fence on Old U.S. Highway 220 in July 2011.
Each of the potters incorporates texture in their work. Hastings and Brown use various tools to create textures on the surface of their pots. Sometimes this is done through slip to reveal the clay underneath. Other times, it allows glaze to collect in luxurious pools. They specialize in gas reduction, wood, salt and Raku fired pieces.
McCanless spins four different colors of clay on the wheel to create his Agateware. He then carves the pots to give them texture and reveal the patterns underneath the surface. His latest work is taking that a step further and combining marble slab work with his Agateware. He specializes in Agateware and Crystalline.
