Asheboro, NC – This Memorial Day weekend people are encouraged to come to the North Carolina Zoo and see its newest addition a newborn chimpanzee.

On Tuesday evening, May 20th, chimpanzees Amy and Lance welcomed the baby girl. There are now 17 chimps at the N.C. Zoo including five chimps under the age of four. The newest chimp has not yet been named.

Chimpanzees at the zoo are divided into two groups, throughout the day both groups are on exhibit at different times. Each group has young playful chimps zoo visitors can see on exhibit.

New additions at the N.C. Zoo this year include two baboons, otter pup, three cougar kittens and a sitatunga.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, John E. Skvarla, III, Secretary; Pat McCrory, Governor.
