ASHEBORO, NC - Circa Gallery will host an art opening and reception Friday, March, 16 2012 from 5-8 p.m. The opening will feature pottery and furniture created by participants involved in LifeSpan, a non-profit organization in North Carolina that serves children and adults with developmental disabilities.

LifeSpan transforms the lives of adults with developmental disabilities by providing education, employment and enrichment opportunities that promote inclusion, and choice. Handmade arts and crafts pieces are created by individuals at the LifeSpan creative Campus-Guilford. Each piece is as unique as the individuals that create them. Life Span's mission is to develop and operate programs that emphasize inclusion and choice in order to provide education, employment, and enrichment to individuals with developmental disabilities.

LifeSpan began in 1973 when they started a class for five children with developmental disabilities who were excluded from public school. The class was held in space donated by St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Charlotte. The children's program was very successful, they soon added programs for adults. By 1980, they had outgrown their home in St. Mark's Lutheran Church and moved to a new facility on North Graham Street in Charlotte. During the 80s and 90s, new services were added and they began reaching out to individuals beyond the Charlotte region.
Today, LifeSpan serves over 1,200 children and adults in 20 program locations between Haywood and Alamance counties in North Carolina.

The art enrichment program is led by multi-creative artist Dawn Ashby. She believes that "Everyday is a Journey". She graduated from Greensboro College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Arts. Her work is colorful and whimsical. Simple images like hearts, stars and sun faces add whimsy to her creations. Many pieces are decorated with inspiring words and quotes. Her goal is to make fun whimsical pieces that bring a smile to faces and inspire others toward their own "Journey". Dawn is now able to share her love of art, color and creativity with her students in the LifeSpan program
The opening reception will take place Friday, March, 16 from 5-1 p.m. at Circa Gallery, 150 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, The event is free and open to the public.
