Archdale, NC - The Archdale-Trinity Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 2nd Annual Disc Golf Open June 9-10, 2012. This event is a PDGA sanctioned A-Tier National Points Series event and will take place at Archdale Parks and Recreation at Creekside Park, 214 Park Drive, Archdale, NC 27263. The course at Archdale Parks and Rec was designed by Russell Schwarz with INNOVA Disc Golf and began construction about three years ago. Players have been enjoying rounds on the course for about two years.

The Disc Golf Open hosts a field of 90 players. The exciting weekend features 4 rounds of competition, with the top 8 Open Players competing in the final round on Sunday afternoon.

In addition to the Open, Field Events competitions will be held between rounds to compete for various prizes. The cost to participate in the field events is $1, and anyone is welcome to try their hand at the longest throw and closest to the pin.

The world's fastest-growing sport, Disc Golf is played in over 50 countries. The sale of golf discs has been growing consistently for the last five years at a rate of 15-20%, and the number of playing courses has grown worldwide 6% in the last year. North Carolina ranks 4th in the nation for adding courses and events.

Like their traditional golfing counterparts, the disc golfers will be hoping that their "drive" will be long enough and their "putts" accurate enough to result in lots of "birdies." But instead of woods and irons, these golfers will be handling Super Soft putters and Sirius drivers-high tech descendents of the original Frisbee disc.

In disc golf, players see how many strokes (throws) it takes to get from the tee to the hole. The hole in this case is a metal contraption commonly referred to as the basket, which consists of a set of chains hanging over a basket. As the disc flies in, it hits the chains, stops, and drops into the basket.
