Asheboro, NC - The Randolph Arts Guild has set to open an exhibit by artist Rodney Bennett titled “Enter the Black Starr”.  The exhibition will be on display at the Randolph Arts Guild’s Sara Smith Self Gallery located at 123 Sunset Ave. in downtown Asheboro during the month of February. The show is set to open the evening of Tuesday, February 4th with a reception from 5:30 - 7:30pm.  The reception will free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Rodney Bennett’s interest in art dates back to his early childhood when he would draw and create characters from television and comic books.  Later Bennett would attend North Carolina Central University where he majored in Studio Art with a concentration in painting. Since graduation Rodney has steadily gained a reputation for his portraiture and comic book illustration but he also painting, drawing and sculpts prolifically. Many local folks from Randolph County will remember Rodney Bennett for his prowess as a caricature artist at Fall Festival. As talented as Rodney Bennett is as an artist he is almost equally as versed as an educator teaching art classes for youths and adults in a variety venues.

In the current exhibition, “Enter the Black Starr” will feature images, sketches and original drawings from his debut graphic novel by the same name. The graphic novel format tells an in-depth story in a primarily “graphic” or pictorial style with the page divided into panels as one would find in a shorter format comic book.  Each page a work of art in its own right, the exhibition will allow viewers see both the finished drawings and the preparatory work.

Rodney Bennett’s exhibition will be on display in the Sara Smith Self Gallery at the Randolph Arts Guild, located at 123 Sunset Ave. Asheboro, NC from February 4th through February 25th.  A Lunch and Learn with Rodney Bennett is also set for Tuesday February 25th at noon.  The Randolph Arts Guild is open from 10am - 5pm Monday - Friday and 10am - 2pm on Saturdays.
