ASHEBORO, NC — Celebrate Earth Day by attending a weekend long Party for the Planet at the North Carolina Zoo on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19.
On both days the fun gets underway at 10 a.m., with activities throughout the park until 3 p.m., including: visitors turning in bottles and cans for a cup (Sat. & Sun., in Africa & North America Plaza); performance by McCrary Elementary School UNITE Drummers (2 p.m. – 2:45 p.m., Sat. & Sun., in KidZone); music by the Greensboro Symphony’s OrKidStra (10 a.m. & 11 a.m., Sat., in KidZone); face painting (10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sat., in Africa & North America Plaza); music by Healing Force (11 a.m. & 1 p.m., Sat., in Africa Plaza); storytelling by Fred Motley (10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sun., in Africa Plaza); tree giveaway (Sat. & Sun., in Africa & North America Plaza); Bowling for Rhinos (10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Sat. & Sun., in Watani Grasslands); and educational smart carts and other activities (10 a.m. - 3 p.m., throughout the park).
Guest environmental exhibitors will be located throughout the park from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and will include: Randolph Co. Water Quality Task Force; DART; Asheboro High School Zoo School; PART; N.C. Friends of John Denver and N.C. DEACS.
Additionally, on Saturday, April 25, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., the zoo will participate in Randolph County Electronic Recycling Day at Randolph Mall in Asheboro. People are urged to bring electronics including televisions and cell phones to the recycling event. Rigid plastics, including lawn chairs and coolers, are also welcome. Members of the Asheboro Police Department and Randolph Sheriff’s Office will be collecting old unwanted prescription pills. There will also be free document shredding.
