ASHEBORO-While the polar bears may be reveling in the snow and ice left by the weekend winter storm, visitors would find it rough going on some of the North Carolina Zoo's walkways, service roads and parking lots over the next couple of days.

For that reason zoo officials have decided that the park will remain closed to the public at least through Monday, Feb. 1, continuing a winter weather shutdown that began on Saturday. A decision on Tuesday operations will be made Monday afternoon after an assessment of park conditions, said Zoo Director Dr. David Jones.

Zoo employees are asked to report Monday under Adverse Weather Plan A. For information, call 1-800-488-0444 or visit the zoo's Web site at

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Dee Freeman, Secretary; Beverly E. Perdue, Governor.
