Cousins in Clay Event Returns to Seagrove

SEAGROVE – A special pottery weekend is happening this weekend in Seagrove. Some things just work better as a pair, like pencil and paper, clay and water – and in Seagrove, you will find a dynamic duo at Bulldog Pottery. Potters, Bruce Gholson and Samantha Henneke are a pair and work side by side in their studio creating pottery that is nearly impossible to resist. Those who collect, create, or covet ceramics or those just beginning to explore the beauty of shaped clay should head out to their "Cousins in Clay" event June 1 & 2, 2013 when the mountains come to the piedmont and the north meets the south.
Special guest potters will be David MacDonald from Syracuse, New York and Jack Troy from Pennsylvania along with Gholson and Henneke's mountain cousin, Michael Kline, a Penland area potter from Bakersville, NC. There will be lots of one-of-a-kind pots for sale beginning Saturday morning at 10 am. Meet the potters who make pottery their life long work.
MacDonald makes his large platters and vessels with patterned geometric designs - a bowtie shape may come to look like the sails of a windmill or a leaf form – and he enhances the visual effect with the placement of glazes to accentuate the patterns he wants people to see. Troy is well-known for his wood-fired organic rich colored porcelain pottery. He has presented over 100 workshops and lectures and has built and designed an impressive amount of wood-fired kilns; and in 2013 his collection of poems called "Calling the Planet Home" was published.
"Cousins in Clay" has built a reputation for featuring some of the best potters in the U.S. Their desire is to make the Cousin's weekend as relaxed and accessible as possible for pottery enthusiasts allowing time for personal discussion with the potters about their work and featuring good food and music throughout the day.
A special feature this year will be a duo throwing demonstration on Saturday by Michael Kline and Bruce Gholson at 3 pm. On Sunday the sale of pots begins at 10 am and the annual Potter's Potluck at 12 pm with Will McCanless playing music. At 1:30 pm, Jack Troy will read a few poems from his published book of poetry.
Make a weekend of visiting Seagrove. Along with many other pottery shops, there are hotels nearby in Asheboro, two bed & breakfast inns in the Seagrove Area, and the North Carolina Pottery Center is in the center of downtown Seagrove at 233 East Ave.
