NC Zoo to remain closed through Monday

Posted on 03/07/14

Asheboro, NC — Due to the number of fallen trees throughout the park as a result of Friday’s winter storm and the prediction for continued frozen precipitation Friday evening, the North Carolina Zoo will remain closed to the public through Monday, March 10. The zoo was also closed Friday due to the weather.

According to Zoo Director Dr. David Jones, concern for employee safety will prevent staff from beginning fallen tree removal until Sunday. After that, it will take at least two days, and perhaps longer, to clear service roads, walkways and animal exhibits of the debris, Jones said.

General Curator Ken Reininger reported no animal-related problems due to the weather by late Thursday. Keepers will continue to have access to holding areas over the next three days to provide animal care.

For information on daily operational status, the public can call the zoo’s toll-free number at 1-800-488-0444 or visit the website at www.nczoo.org.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, John E. Skvarla, III, Secretary; Pat McCrory, Governor.
