Art on Sunset to feature the artwork of Local Artists and World Music

Asheboro, NC - The Randolph Arts Guild is excited to announce the return of Art on Sunset, a Juried Arts and Crafts show that will feature the work of nearly twenty artists and artisans. This year’s event is set for Saturday May 3th, 2014 from 10am - 4pm in downtown Asheboro, NC. 

On May 3rd Art on Sunset will return to its roots and be held in the Bicentennial Park parking lot adjacent to Sunset Ave. The event started in 2006 as a complement to the Randolph Arts Guild’s other well known event, Fall Festival. This event is much smaller and focuses solely on artists and crafters. Unlike Fall Festival, artists must apply and be selected based on the quality of their work. This year’s selected artists are:

This year Art on Sunset is also poised to present two great musical acts at the Bicentennial stage that day, Mande Foly and the local Taiko Drummers. 

The first group Mande Foly is a collective of musicians & dancers who perform traditions of West Africa, Mande referring to a region which predates national boundaries, and which links many smaller ethnic groups together as one. The group features several West Africans, and although they may come from different countries, their ancestry, and a vast repertoire of music & dance, is linked through Mande. 

The music of Mande Foly is dynamic and improvisational, rooted in a strong rhythm section consisting of West African drums, including the djembe and dununs. The dance of Mande Foly is deeply connected with the music, yet light, free-flowing, and interactive. Along with the syncopated harmonies between the guitars and call & response singing, the performance of Mande Foly delivers a hypnotic experience that attracts people of all ages and backgrounds. Mande Foly will be performing at 11am & 2pm. 

The second group is the local Taiko Drumming group headed by Jim Sink. These drummers provide an exhilarating performance that celebrates this unique Japanese cultural tradition and art form. The drummers are set to perform at 1pm. 

In addition aforementioned art and music, concurrently there will also be an event in the Sunset Theatre called Song Spar at the Sunset.  This event will feature original work from local songwriters as they battle it out in a winner take all competition from noon - 3pm.
