NC Zoo to reopen on Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Posted on 03/10/14

Asheboro, NC — After four days of closure due to tree damage from the recent ice storm, the North Carolina Zoo will reopen to the public on Tuesday, March 11.

Fallen trees blocked both visitor walkways and service roads inside the zoo following the freezing rain and sleet that coated the Piedmont last Friday. Zoo horticulture and visitor services staffs have worked since to clear the debris.

Visitors who come to the park over the next couple of days are warned to watch for tree limbs that remain near sidewalks in some exhibit areas. No problems with animals or damage to exhibits or zoo buildings was reported as a result of the storm although some containment fences were threatened.

The zoo will resume normal winter operating hours of 9 a.m. to  4 p.m. on Tuesday. For information on daily operational status, the public can call the zoo’s toll-free number at 1-800-488-0444 or visit the website at www.nczoo.org.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, John E. Skvarla, III, Secretary; Pat McCrory, Governor.
