The Randolph Arts Guild hosts Pysanky Egg Craft Class with the McFetters

Posted on 02/13/14
Asheboro, NC -- "Pysanky" (pronounced peh-sahn-keh) is a 2000 year old Ukrainian tradition of writing on eggs with wax.  The vibrant coloring of the egg with imagery and design symbolizes good luck, posterity and the arrival of Spring.  Mother/daughter team, Karen and Grace McFetters return to the Randolph Arts Guild (RAG) to lead their popular oval-esque masterpiece class.  All materials are included and you take home one completed egg, egg stand, and a full pysanky kit (so you can make them at home).  The class meets on Saturday, March 29 from 10 a.m, -- 3 p.m.  All materials are provided.  Bring a lunch.  Payment and completed registration are required for enrollment.  Enrollment deadline is Wednesday, March 12.  $50 (RAG members), $55 (non-members).  This class meets at the Moring Arts Center located at 123 Sunset Avenue in downtown Asheboro.  For more information contact the Randolph Arts Guild at (336) 629-0399.

Bio:

Mother/daughter team, Karen and Grace McFetters are attracted to eggs.  Not just any kind of eggs -- hand dyed Ukranian Pysanky eggs.  They are a 2000 year old craft loaded with color and symbols.  These two ladies make them year around using whatever eggs they can source.  The craft uses candles to heat wax that is drawn over the eggs.  The eggs are then dyed.  The McFetters creations have been feature on TV and newspapers all over.  Karen leads several "heritage crafting" opportunities at the Randolph Arts Guild.  She was the 2013 Fall Festival Heritage Village Coordinator, teaches a variety of Guild classes for youth as well as adults, and hosts weekly knitting sessions.  Karen and Grace return to the Guild for several classes in 2014 including a home school Pysanky Class and an advanced two-day Pysanky Class that incorporates the use of larger fowl eggs.  These classes will be offered in the next quarter.
