Seagrove to Celebrate 100 Years with Centennial Celebration
Posted on 09/04/13Seagrove, NC — The town of Seagrove will celebrate its 100 year anniversary on Saturday, September 21st. This one-day “Seagrove Centennial Celebration” event will kick off at 11 am with a parade starting at Seagrove Volunteer Fire Department and ending at Seagrove Elementary School.
Seagrove boasts the largest community of potters with the longest continual history of pottery making in the United States. Their ceramic history began with the abundant and diverse natural clay deposits found in the area. Today, the town is known as the handmade pottery capital of the United States where artisans create handcrafted pottery in nearly 100 shops and galleries scattered throughout the area.
A portion of the parade route will go down Old Plank Road, which ran through Seagrove linking Fayetteville and what would later be known as Winston-Salem. Between the plank road, the railroad and the pottery industry, Seagrove became a bustling center of commerce in southern Randolph County. The parade will feature antique cars and tractors, wagons, floats and horses.
Staff at the Seagrove Library will be dressed in period costume providing tours of a special archive section with many of the town’s historic items and photos on display.
In conjunction with the Seagrove Centennial Celebration, the North Carolina Pottery Center will host a Family Day showcasing the pottery tradition through activities including a pottery identification workshop; pottery ornaments for kids; and pottery and agate-ware turning, Native American pottery, and Raku firing demonstrations.
A shuttle service will be available for visitors to park at the famous “Lucks Cannery” with a ride every 15 minutes to the Seagrove Library where they can find a spot along the street to view the parade. Other activities will include games, face painting, a frog jumping contest, and various types of music. Food will be served at various locations throughout the day.
