Earth Day festivities on tap at NC Zoo

ASHEBORO N.C.—The North Carolina Zoo will hold its 14th annual Earth Day celebration throughout the park this weekend, April 19 & 20. The event a family-fun celebration of natural resources and outdoor pursuits will provide entertainment and activities that will educate visitors on what they can do to help preserve and care for our planet.

This year’s zoo Earth Day activities will include:“Designs in Nature” which lets kids get creative—naturally, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Zebra Trail; “Painted Landscapes” which lets kids explore colors and textures, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at “kidZone”; and “The Scrap Exchange” a traveling creative arts program, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the North America Plaza. Additionally there will be displays on alternative vehicle technology including hybrid cars and the zoo’s use of biodiesel fuel for park vehicles and equipment, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. near Sonora Desert and face painting and tattoos, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Junction Plaza.

Entertainment will include live music by Pamlico Joe at Junction Plaza at noon and 2 p.m. each day; Radio Disney with prizes and activities for kids, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday in the North America Plaza; and the costumed character “Smokey the Bear” at the North America Plaza, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Randolph Telephone will have a cell-phone recycling station at the Africa Plaza from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Environmentally centered businesses, foundations, and agencies will have booths and demonstrations throughout the park from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day.  Visitors leaving through the North America gate on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. can receive a tree seedling to plant. Also on both days visitors can bring a can or bottle to the North America Plaza 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to exchange for a reusable cup which can be used at the park for discounted drinks.  All entertainment and activities are free with paid zoo admission.

All scheduled events are subject to change due to weather.The zoo’s seasonal event sponsor is Pepsi; the month-long April “ZooFLING” events are made possible by ClearChannel. Earth Day weekend activities are being produced with the help of volunteers from UNC-G and Pfeiffer University. All scheduled events are subject to change due to weather.
