NC Zoo Names Volunteer of the Year

Posted on 03/20/13

Asheboro, NC - A Zebulon mother of three has been named the North Carolina Zoo Volunteer of the Year at an award's presentation at the park Thursday.

Brandy Massey was presented the annual award for her "giving so faithfully and freely of her time, talents and resources," according to the zoo's Volunteer Coordinator Toy Lambeth.

Volunteering initially with her oldest daughter, Massey has recently been joined by her two younger daughters as well. Now, on the eve of her fourth consecutive volunteer season, Massey and all three of her daughters have more than proven their commitment as volunteers not only as exhibit interpreters, but also as special-events workers and zoo hosts.

Massey incurred an estimated $800 in fuel cost, drove more than 4,000 miles and endured nearly 80 hours traveling to and from the zoo during the year (an estimated 210 miles, roundtrip).

"She genuinely enjoys what she's doing, "said Megan Shupp, a keeper at the zoo who often works with Massey. "There are many challenges to working (in the park). It can be very hot; it can be very busy. Brandy takes it all in stride--with a smile on her face."
