ASHEBORO - A New Street Festival is coming to Asheboro. The SUNSET STREET FESTIVAL which is presented by Asheboro Parks & Recreation will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 9 am - 6 pm.

This Festival will offer arts and crafts vendors as well as artist demonstrations. A children's play area providing a variety of inflatables, games, and activities will be set up. An antique car show will be featured. The Habitat For Humanity BBQ Cook-Off will take place in Bicentennial Park. The Downtown Farmer's Market will open at 7 am providing fresh local produce. Food vendors featuring funnel cakes, sno cones, blooming onions, lemonade, and much more will be on hand. Live music featuring a variety of rock, oldies, bluegrass, country, and christian music will be featured during the day.

The SUNSET STREET FESTIVAL promises to offer something for everyone. Merchants on Sunset Avenue and Church Street will be open for business. Come and enjoy a great day in downtown Asheboro!

An antique car show will take place at Bicentennial Park. The public is invited to vote on the Best of show, Best Interior, and Best Exterior. Judging will end at 2 pm. Awards will be given out at 3 pm. There is no charge for advanced registration. Day of registration will be $5. Limited spaces are available. 

The Habitat for Humanity BBQ Cook-off will take place in Bicentennial Park. This 3rd annual event is being held in conjunction with the Sunset Street Festival. This event will start on Friday night with 8 to 10 cookers gathering in the park around 10 pm to begin cooking BBQ. Judging for the Cook-off will begin at 9 am. Those interested in participating may contact Habitat for Humanity at 625-1429. Winners will be announced around 10am.

The Downtown Farmer's Market will host Strawberry Day. Come and check out the variety of vegetables, plants, beef, chicken, and eggs in this beautiful open air environment.

The historic Sunset Theatre will also be open. Tours will be available during the day. Dont miss scenes of Asheboro from the 1940s - 50s & 60s. Arts and crafts are as follows: handbags, jewelry, pencil drawings, wood crafts, flower art, face painting, wood furniture, scented candles, tie dye clothing, soy candles, walking canes and sling shots, wood toys, raku pottery, wood turning, photography, screen printing, metal art, hand thrown pottery, fused glass, baskets, weaving, travel pillows, hair bows, glassware, floral arrangements, gift baskets, potpourri, wind spinners, spices, wooden roses, caricature drawings, and original artwork.

This street festival has food: Enjoy funnel cakes, Sno cones, shaved ice, Gyros, smoothies, crepes, aloha Hawaiian platters, steak and cheese, polish sausage, apple tarts, cinnamon sticks, lemonade, nuts, blooming onions, Italian ice, and of course fresh BBQ courtesy of the Habitat for Humanity BBQ Cook-off competitors.

Musical entertainment on the stage located in front of Monroe's Music will included the following: 11am - True Grass Bluegrass, 12pm - Bantum Rooster Oldies Rock-n-Roll, 1pm - Brittnee Loflin & Friends Southern Gospel, 2pm - Concrete Evidence Country, 3pm - HeRose Christian, 4pm - Paparoxy Classic Rock.

On stage at 10 am before the music begins the Asheboro Appearance Commission will unveil an educational component of Mayor David Jarrell's anti-litter campaign called "Are You More Literate Than a 5th Grader?" In the spirit of FOX TV's "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" this event targets every fifth grader in the Asheboro school system a 20 question test has been created incorporating science, math, language arts, and comprehension skills addressing an array of topics including: water shed issues, anti-litter awareness, recycling, environmental health, and community pride. The five leading test scorers from the participating schools McCrary, Lindley Park, Loflin, & Balfour will face-off in the 10 am competition. First place winners then proceed to play against a team of city officials. Winners will be awarded prizes.

The SUNSET STREET FESTIVAL will be a fun event that promises something for everyone. Applications are currently being taken for the antique car show. The Sunset Street Festival is an excellent opportunity to do that last minute shopping for Mother's Day which will be on Sunday, May 11th. This event will be held rain or shine!
