Cousins in Clay 2012 at Bulldog Pottery

Posted on 04/24/12

Seagrove, NC - Come visit with Five "Cousins in Clay" May 26 & 27, 2012 - Contemporary Ceramic Art at Bulldog Pottery, Seagrove, North Carolina. Featuring special guest potters, Ron Meyers and Judith Duff. And their inspiring pottery.

Seagrove potters, Bruce Gholson and Samantha Henneke, are hosting two special guest potters, Ron Meyers, an icon of American ceramics from Athens, Georgia, and Judith Duff, a full-time studio potter from Brevard, NC. Ron is one of the most influential potters and educators of our time, having spent 20 years as a professor of ceramic art at the University of Georgia and over 40 years working and teaching in clay. His work is vigorous and incredibly fresh with lively images. He is famous for his challengingly charismatic animal portraits that decorate his undulating and expressionistic pottery. Judith Duff is one of the great makers of pottery in North Carolina. Judith makes wood-fired, richly organic, and ethereally earthy pottery, as well as works in the Japanese shino tradition. Indeed, this will be a rare opportunity to spend time with internationally known potters.

Michael Kline from Bakersville, NC, is continuing with his Seagrove ‘cousins' for his 4th year with Samantha and Bruce for "Cousins in Clay". He is known for his lyrical floral brushwork that gracefully wraps around his wood-fired traditional forms. Michael writes a really fine blog at www.sawdustanddirt.com.

Bruce and Samantha of Bulldog Pottery are well respected for their iridescent crystalline glazes and imagery that reflect their interests in the natural world. They plan to have a new grouping of their one-of-a-kind wall porcelain paintings, their flowing crystalline glazed vases, and their comfortable drinking vessels, along with warm hospitality.

"Cousins in Clay" is a pottery kinship based on a shared appreciation for the pursuit of excellence within the diverse language of clay. May 26 & 27 will be a special time to meet these five potters; come and ask questions, add to your pottery collection or begin one. Each of these artists makes "utilitarian pots" - pots you serve in, store in, drink out of and ones you may just want to look at - all with an artistic beauty of their own design.

Live music will fill the air with Chronis Pou Vasiliou (Bruce's brother-in-law) of Greensboro playing his enchanting Greek Bouzouki music along with musician Matthew Beasley from Asheville. Music begins at noon and lasts throughout Saturday afternoon with a light buffet.

Michael Kline will present brushwork demonstrations on Saturday at 2:00pm and on Sunday at 1:30pm. And Sunday at noon potters and lovers of pots are all invited for a Potluck Buffet at 12:00 noon.

Hours are Saturday from 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm. For more information call Bruce Gholson at 336-302-3469.
