Posted on 06/01/11

ASHEBORO, NC - It's all about bears at the North Carolina Zoo Saturday, June 4, when the park holds the first of four June weekend celebrations of bears-and bees--when guests can explore life as a bear and later catch the buzz on bees.

This weekend's bear event, "Polar Paws & Claws," will feature polar bears and will be highlighted with keeper talks, information stations and educational displays manned by volunteers at the polar bear exhibit, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

On Saturday, June 11, during "Grizzly Walks & Talks," visitors can again talk to keepers and see educational displays and crafts at the grizzly exhibit. There will also be storytelling and music by author Cynthia Mitchell at the Honey Bee Garden.

On Saturday, June 18, during "Black Bears & Bees," visitors can learn all about "the bears & the bees" through storytelling, crafts and zoo keeper talks at the black bear exhibit and at the Honey Bee Garden.

On Saturday, June 25, the zoo wraps up bear month with the Teddy Bear Fair, when visitors can bring their teddy bears or other stuffed friends for a check-up with zoo veterinary staff.

Additionally, the new ocelot kittens, born in April, are on exhibit at the Sonora Desert.

Visitors can get more information on all the June weekend activities at the zoo Web site: http://www.nczoo.org/. Coca-Cola is the signature sponsor for all zoo special events this year.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Dee Freeman, Secretary; Beverly E. Perdue, Governor.
