NC Zoo celebrates 'Save the Frogs Day'

Posted on 04/29/10

ASHEBORO, NC - In an effort to raise awareness of the plight of amphibians and of the ever-growing crisis of their extinction, the North Carolina Zoo will take part in the 2nd international Save the Frogs Day at the park Friday from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The event will take place in the zoo's Cypress Swamp exhibit area and will feature live frog displays, informational and educational displays, games and activities for children, and zoo keeper talks.
Save the Frogs Day is a perfect time for teachers, students and the public to focus on amphibian conservation, learn about amphibian extinctions and learn ways that we can all contribute to the conservation of this vital natural resource.

Frog populations are faced with an onslaught of environmental problems including pollution, habitat loss, infectious diseases, invasive species, climate change, and over-harvesting for the pet and food trade. Unless these problems are remedied, amphibian species will continue to disappear, resulting in irreversible consequences to the planet's ecosystems.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Dee Freeman, Secretary; Beverly E. Perdue, Governor.
