North Carolina Zoo critters get holiday 'Eggstravaganza' treats

ASHEBORO, N.C.-The North Carolina Zoo will hold its annual "Egg-Stravaganza" on Saturday, April 11, featuring treats for the animals.

Zookeepers will place papier-mâché eggs, made by zoo volunteers and filled with appropriate food treats, in some of the animal exhibits, along with other enrichment items. Additionally, keepers will be available to answer questions at scheduled times throughout the day.

The schedule includes: otters, 10:30 a.m.;cougars & red river hogs, 11 a.m.; lions, 11:30 a.m.; puffins at Rocky Coast, 11:30 a.m. & 2:30 p.m.; chimps, 2 p.m.; elephants, 2:30 p.m.; and baboons, 3 p.m. There will also be a Sonora Desert egg display & an Aviary egg collection display, at 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. at both locations.

As an added treat, Radio Disney will be in the North America Plaza from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., with games and giveaways.

"Egg-Stravaganza" is part of the zoo's ongoing animal enrichment program to provide both mental and physical stimulation for the animals, allowing them to find and play with the treats as well as experience the tastes and smells.

"It's our special way of doing something extra for our animals and providing a visual treat for our visitors at the same time," said Guy Lichty, the zoo's curator of mammals."
