Christmas on Sunset 2018, Canceled Due to Weather Forecast

Posted on 12/12/18

Asheboro, NC – Due to the weather forecast calling for rain and thunderstorms this Friday, December 14th, the City of Asheboro and the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce have announced the decision to cancel Christmas on Sunset.  It will not be rescheduled for another date this year.

“We have been consulting with City staff about the weather forecast, and about the logistics of finding an alternative date”, shared Amy Rudisill, the Chamber’s Membership & Events Director.  “Most people don’t realize all the moving parts involved for this event.  When you include the 12 musical groups from schools throughout the County that perform, the six-horse carriage owners and their support teams, multiple City departments and their employees including Police, Fire, Public Works, Facilities, and Recreation & Cultural Services Departments, plus Chamber volunteers and downtown merchants – there are well over 200 individuals working together to make this event happen.”  Event organizers cited conflicts with other planned events, programs, and school vacation schedules in the run-up to the Christmas holidays as factors in being unable to secure an alternative date.  In the meantime, the City and Chamber are reminding citizens that while the event has been canceled, restaurants and many of the downtown shops will still be open as planned.

“This decision is not made lightly, and not without a great deal of regret,” said Rudisill.  This makes the second year the event has been canceled due to weather (last year was due to icy and unsafe sidewalks and roadways).  “Christmas on Sunset is designed to be a great outdoor, old-fashioned, holiday experience for families to share, creating lifelong memories together.  Unfortunately, the rain doesn’t allow for that to happen.”
