ASHEBORO, NC – In 2016, experience the North Carolina Zoo in a way like never before, volunteer. Zoo volunteers get to witness magical moments every day at the Zoo such as watching a child come face to face with a chimpanzee for the first time, or hearing students in a school group giggle as they watch a polar bear splash into water.

With a new year upon us, the Zoo is kicking off its annual volunteer recruitment campaign with orientations beginning Sat, Jan. 23. Volunteers are an integral part of what makes the Zoo a wonderful place to visit. Last year, Zoo volunteers & unpaid interns served more than 40,000 hours.

There are many benefits to volunteering at the zoo, including access to behind-the-scenes tours, training, zoo discounts, meeting others who share a similar passion and earning valuable service hours for college scholarship/service-based clubs, or gaining job experience.

The typical Volunteer season is April – October, although some positions are year round. Youth may volunteer independently at age 16, and with a parent or legal guardian at age 12.

If you are looking for fun, creative and rewarding ways to give back to the community, volunteering at the zoo might be for you. To learn more about volunteer opportunities at the North Carolina Zoo and to be notified of training dates, please visit www.nczoo.org/volunteer and complete an online application, or contact the zoo's volunteer coordinator, Toy Lambeth, at [email protected].
