Asheboro, NC — Splash into the North Carolina Zoo North America Region on Saturday to celebrate World Oceans Day from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Children can create bottle cap art, make igloos with milk jugs, learn the Japanese art of fish printing and participate in a host of other activities that emphasize protecting the oceans for future generations.

Representatives with REPREVE Recycled Goods will be at the event to demonstrate how certain items are made from plastic bottles. Oceans cover nearly 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and contain about 97 percent of the planet’s water supply.

In addition to World Oceans Day, zoo guests can hit the ground walking or running during the zoo’s Run Wild 5K. Registration for the 5K begins at 6:30 a.m. The race starts at 7 a.m. Fees for the 5K will pay for individuals to receive a timing chip, a free pass to the zoo and a race T-shirt. The price for adults who register before Saturday is $30. It is $35 the day of the race. For participants under 18, registration is $25 before Saturday and $30 the day of the race. Information on how to register for the 5K can be found at the following link: http://www.ncaazk.com/runwild5k2015.htm.

The North Carolina Zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Donald R. van der Vaart, Secretary; Pat McCrory, Governor.
