O'Kelley Appointed to North Carolina Travel and Tourism Board
Posted on 05/04/13Raleigh, NC - Thom Tillis, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives recently appointed Tammy O'Kelley, Director of the Randolph County Tourism Development Authority, to serve on the North Carolina Travel and Tourism Board. O'Kelley's appointment is effective immediately and she will attend her first meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2013.
"I'm delighted and honored to have been asked to serve North Carolina's travel and tourism industry in this capacity," said O'Kelley upon being notified of her appointment on Thursday.
The North Carolina Tourism Board advocates the sound development of the state's travel and tourism industry. Created in 1991, the board advises the Secretary of Commerce on policy matters related to tourism promotion in North Carolina. Among other duties, the board recommends programs that will promote the state as a travel and tourism destination; advises the Secretary on the effectiveness of agencies contracting with the N.C. Department of Commerce's Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development; and promotes the exchange of ideas and information on travel and tourism between state and local government agencies, private organization and individuals.
"They could not have chosen a better person for this board appointment. She has our full support in representing Randolph County at the state level and we know she will do an excellent job," said Hal Johnson, chairman of the board of the tourism development authority.
As the director of tourism for Randolph County, O'Kelley leads the efforts of the Heart of North Carolina Visitors Bureau which serves as the official destination marketing organization representing Archdale, Asheboro, Franklinville, Liberty, Ramseur, Randleman, Seagrove, Staley, and Trinity; and oversees the staffing and operations of the Randolph County Visitor Centers in Seagrove. She has been employed with the authority since June, 2001 and was promoted to director in August, 2006. O'Kelley also serves on the boards of the NC Travel & Tourism Coalition, Piedmont Triad Film Commission, and Archdale-Trinity Chamber of Commerce; and holds professional memberships in Destination Marketing Association International, U.S. Travel Association, Southeast Tourism Society, and the N.C. Restaurant & Lodging Association.
A life-long resident of Randolph County, O'Kelley lives in Asheboro with her husband, Mike.
