"Hands-On" Day at Westmoore Pottery

All day Saturday, March 27th, visitors of all ages are invited to a "hands-on" day at Westmoore Pottery. This year our focus will be on decorating. Westmoore Pottery welcomes both adults and children to participate. Come learn about various historical decorating techniques and then try it yourself!

"Wear your old clothes," warns potter Mary Farrell, "since pottery is a messy business!"

Westmoore Pottery does an annual "hands-on" day in the late winter or early spring. Each year a different aspect of pottery is offered for the public to try. Two years ago, people tried their hands at working on the potters' wheel. Last year visitors tried making handles. "We offer something different each year," says potter David Farrell, "so that over a stretch of time, people can become familiar with many of the processes involved in making pottery." In addition to learning something about the process of pottery, visitors often go away from the "hands-on" days with a new appreciation of the skill it takes to make the clay do what you want it to do.

Potters David and Mary Farrell of Westmoore Pottery are often named among a handful of the best traditional potters in the nation today. Their work is found in museum and private collections around the country.

Westmoore Pottery is located at 4622 Busbee Road, near Seagrove, North Carolina, and is open to the public from 9-5 Monday through Saturday. There is no charge for this event.
