Posted on 05/05/09

ASHEBORO, N.C.-As part of International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) held annually across the nation and to highlight the park's more than 40,000 plants, the North Carolina Zoo will celebrate "Birds & Blooms" Saturday, May 9, at the park.

Additionally, on Sunday, in celebration of Mother's Day, all moms who present a printable online coupon will receive $2 off the general zoo admission with one paid general admission. The coupons can be found on the zoo's Web site (http://www.nczoo.org) and are valid Sunday only.

Saturday's events begin at 10 a.m. and are designed to encourage visitors to help all birds, including migratory birds, and to allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of the park's flowers and plants. The events include discovery tables at "kidZone" and Aviary, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., and Radio Disney at North America Plaza, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
As an added bonus, visitors can experience the park's orchid show in the Africa Pavilion, featuring more than 150 individual orchids and representing about 10-12 different types, including Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Oncidium, Dendrobium, Miltoniopsis and Epidendrum.

The month-long orchid show is the first of three tropical plant exhibits held at the park throughout 2009. An upcoming July show will feature African exotic perennials, and African violets will highlight an October show. All three month-long displays will be part of the Tropical Plant Walk in the Pavilion.

"Birds & Blooms" is made possible through signature sponsor Pepsi.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment & Natural Resources, Dee Freeman, Secretary; Beverly Eaves Perdue, Governor.
