Posted on 04/13/09

ASHEBORO, N.C.-Helped by its annual "Egg-Stravaganza" event, the North Carolina Zoo set a new attendance record for Easter Saturday with 10,681 guests. The
previous Saturday record was 10,437 in 1995.

The "Egg-Stravaganza" event Saturday featured zoo keepers placing papier-mâché eggs, made by zoo volunteers and filled with appropriate food treats, in some of the animal exhibits, along with other enrichment items. Additionally, keepers were available throughout the day to answer animal questions.

As an added treat, Radio Disney set up shop in the North America Plaza with games and giveaways for guests.

"Egg-Stravaganza" is part of the zoo's ongoing animal enrichment program to provide both mental and physical stimulation for the animals, allowing them to find and play with the treats as well as experience the tastes and smells.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Dee A. Freeman, Secretary; Beverly E. Perdue, Governor.
