Rhinoleap Productions Announces 2020-2021 Season

Posted on 07/03/20

Asheboro, NC – RhinoLeap Productions is based in Asheboro and is a professional theater company dedicated to social change and community building through the arts. We have a dual mission: to produce professional theatrical productions that travel to communities throughout North Carolina and to conduct residencies in public high schools across the state that put students into direct contact with experienced, working artists. Our professional artists come from all over North Carolina and across the country. We also hire current college students from many of North Carolina’s top arts programs.

Our projects next season include: Mary’s Wedding performed live in an old textile mill in Asheboro that will also be filmed and streamed; The Glass Menagerie presented at the historic Sunset Theatre; Driving Miss Daisy as a co-production with Temple Theatre; and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee co-produced with the Randolph Youth Theatre Company and performed at the new George Washington Caver Center. Additionally, we will be doing educational residencies in three Randolph County high schools while also offering classes at our new office/rehearsal space with Venture Asheboro located at 138 Dublin Square Road.

SEPTEMBER 9-26, 2020

MARY’S WEDDING by Stephen Massicotte

PERFORMED AT MILL 133

133 South Church Street, Asheboro, NC (Behind The Table)

Limited seating: 25 per performance. Tickets available only with a Season Subscription.

On a summer evening, Mary and Charlie unexpectedly find one another sheltered in a barn during a thunderstorm.  A tentative love is born. But the year is 1914, and their first flirtations ignite right as World War I begins to engulf the world. This love story fractures the hard rules of time as it unfolds across vast prairies, on the decks of ships, and in the chaotic trenches of Europe's no-man's land.

NOVEMBER 14-22, 2020

The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams

PERFORMED AT THE SUNSET THEATRE

234 Sunset Ave, Asheboro, NC

Limited seating: 80 per performance.

A drama of great tenderness and charm, The Glass Menagerie pulls the audience inside the head and heart of a dreamer named Tom as he conjures memories of his mother and sister at a time before he left home to pursue his career as a writer.  This iconic American masterpiece has been adapted for film, television, opera and radio, but there is no substitute for seeing it live on stage.

JANUARY 30 – FEBRUARY 7, 2021

DRIVING MISS DAISY by Alfred Uhry

A co-production with Temple Theatre

PERFORMED AT THE SUNSET THEATRE

234 Sunset Ave, Asheboro, NC

Limited seating: 80 per performance.

When Daisy, a widowed, 72-year-old Jewish woman living in Atlanta, is deemed too old to drive, her son hires Hoke, an African American man, to be her chauffeur.  What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing, soon blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship.  This production will also be presented in Sanford, NC.

MAY 8-16, 2021

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Music and lyrics by William Finn & Book by Rachel Sheinkin

A musical co-production with RYTC

PERFORMED AT THE GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER CENTER

950 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Asheboro, NC

Limited seating: 150 per performance.

A wildly funny musical that follows a group of six teens vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime.  While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the contestants spell their way through a series of increasingly crazy words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter.  One speller leaves!  This Tony Award winning musical has been charming audiences across the country for years and now it is coming to Asheboro.
