New Section of Deep River Rail Trail unveiled

Posted on 06/01/19

FRANKLINVILLE — People gathered at Riverside Park in Franklinville Saturday morning for the unveiling of a new section of the Deep River Rail Trail.

“This is a banner day for Franklinville and the Deep River State Trail,” Mary Joan Pugh said prior to a ribbon cutting and group walk down the trail. She has been instrumental in the trail’s development.

The new addition to the forested trail connects a 3/4 mile section of trail on an old rail bed that parallels the Deep River to make a 3-mile roundtrip hike.

The trail is part of the Deep River State Trail, which is included in N.C. State Parks system that runs through Guilford, Randolph, Chatham, Moore, and Lee counties.

“You can come here and have an authentic outdoor experience,” Pugh said. “Natural, historical and cultural.”

Pugh added that of the 15 miles of the trail that exist in Randolph County, 12 of those miles will have been acquired by the end of 2019.
