ASHEBORO, NC – After a severe storm damaged hundreds of trees and other property such as signs, doors and fences last Thursday, the North Carolina Zoo reopened its North America Region yesterday. Exhibits in North America will now remain open as usual, while the zoo’s Africa Region, which was much more heavily damaged will remain closed until further notice.

“Our staff has worked diligently to clean and reopen the entire zoo. Exhibits in the zoo’s Africa Region are surrounded by a large number of trees, which is why the damage was greater in that area of the zoo,” said Dr. David Jones, director of the zoo.”

Until the entire park reopens, fun package tickets are not available and the zoo is charging half price for admission. Some of the zoo’s North America exhibits include: KidZone, polar bear, alligators, seals and cougars. For information on all the exhibits in North America zoo visitors can go to http://www.nczoo.org/NorthAmerica.

“We are assessing cleanup efforts throughout the park daily and we will provide an update by Wednesday afternoon regarding when we will likely reopen the entire zoo,” said Dr. Jones.

For information on daily operational status, the public can visit the zoo’s website at www.nczoo.org.

The North Carolina Zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Donald R. van der Vaart, Secretary; Pat McCrory, Governor.
