Returning Dr. Arwin Smallwood, professor and chair of the History Department at North Carolina A & T State University, details the history and importance of Juneteenth, which celebrates the proclamation ending enslavement on June 19, 1865. Smallwood will talk about the impact of slavery not just on African Americans, but on all Americans, and the historic efforts required to abolish it. He also will draw attention enslavement in North Carolina and the over 5,000 African Americans and Native Americans who fought to end it and create better lives for themselves and all the people of the state after the Civil War.
