NC Zoo needs volunteers

Posted on 01/18/11

ASHEBORO, NC - For those seeking something more than New Year's resolutions of diet and exercise this year, determine to reshape your life by becoming a volunteer at the North Carolina Zoo.

The zoo is currently recruiting volunteers to serve as animal care-givers to native orphaned and injured animals at the zoo's Valerie H. Schindler's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Volunteers are also needed to serve a vital role as Exhibit Interpreters, stationed at various exhibits throughout the zoo, interacting with visitors to provide information about the zoo's animal and plant collections and about the conservation of the world's wildlife.

In addition to these positions, volunteers are also being recruited to serve as Giraffe-Deck operators, zoo hosts and to serve in the park's retail stores.

Minimum age for volunteers is 16, but there are some opportunities for parents and children (minimum age of 12) to volunteer together.

Volunteering at the zoo is a great way to make new friends, give back to the community, share your passion for wildlife and the environment, earn volunteer-service hours for college applications, explore new career opportunities and even help manage stress.

To learn more about volunteering at the zoo, visit www.nczoo.org and complete an on-line application or contact the zoo's Volunteer Coordinator, Toy Jarrett, at 336.879.7712 for orientation and training dates.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Dee A. Freeman, Secretary; Beverly E. Perdue, Governor.
