NC Zoo Sets Annual Halloween Celebration

Posted on 10/22/13

ASHEBORO, NC — Little ghosts and goblins will once again be haunting the trails of the North Carolina Zoo this weekend when the zoo holds its annual daytime Halloween celebration for kids of all ages, “Boo at the Zoo.”

On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26-27, the zoo will come alive with two magical days of family fun featuring games, trick-or-treating, entertainment and costume contests. The two-day activity runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day in the zoo’s Africa and North America plazas.

All children are encouraged to wear their Halloween best for the costume contests. At the Africa Amphitheater, judges will award prizes each day in three age categories for best costumes: infant through age 3, ages 4-7 and ages 8-12. Costume-contest registration begins at 1 p.m. both days, and contestants take the stage for judges at the Africa Amphitheater at 2 p.m.

Adult costumes, adult masks or adult face painting are not allowed inside the park.

All games will take place in the North America Plaza, where treat bags will also be given out. Guests can also view assorted carved pumpkins, all with an animal theme and all done by the park's zoo keepers, in the Africa Plaza.

Additional entertainment this year will include guessing the weight of a pumpkin and kids' boo tattoos, African storyteller Fred Motley, Rick Hubbard’s Kazoobie Show and drum circles and crafts by Music Exlporium. An added attraction this year will be cooking demonstrations for kids in the Junction Plaza by America’s youngest master cook, Chef Remmi.

All the weekend fun is included in the regular zoo admission of $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (62+) and $8 for children (ages 2-12).

Coca-Cola is the sponsor for “Boo at the Zoo” and the signature sponsor for all 2013 events.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment & Natural Resources, John E. Skvarla, III, Secretary; Pat McCrory, Governor.
