Asheboro, NC - The Randolph Arts Guild is set to feature the first solo gallery exhibition of potter Kate Johnston in the Sara Smith Self Gallery during the month of May. An opening reception is set for Tuesday, May 2nd from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. The Randolph Arts Guild’s Sara Smith Self Gallery is located at 123 Sunset Avenue in downtown Asheboro. The event is free and open to the public. A Lunch and Learn is set for Tuesday, May 30th. The exhibition will be on display until Saturday, June 3rd

Kate Johnston opened her pottery studio in Seagrove, North Carolina in 2010. In the year’s since she has shown her pots throughout North Carolina and has lectured and taught in North Carolina, Tennessee, and New Jersey. Kate’s work varies in scale from very large vessels to everyday functional pieces. In this show, there will be pots of all sizes, botanical drawings and the pre-drawings for her surface carvings. Her exhibition coincides with the lead up to the International Woodfire Conference at STARworks in Star, N.C. Set for early June. More details on that event can be found at http://www.woodfirenc.com.

Kate’s pots are made with local materials, boldly carved with organic patterns inspired by Art Deco design, and fired in a large wood-burning kiln. Her carving process starts with a solid layer of slip on the still wet piece. She then carves the pattern, slowly taking away the background and allowing the design to emerge. The carving is exact- the lines cannot be un-made. When the carving is finished, she inlays contrasting slip into the background. Last but not least is an overlay ash glaze on selected elements of the pattern. At this point, the piece is finished and ready to go in the wood-fire kiln. More can be found about her process at https://katejohnstonpottery.com.

Kate Johnston’s work will be on display and available for purchase until Saturday, June 3rd and the exhibition is free and open to the public. The Randolph Arts Guild is open Monday - Friday 10 am - 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am - 2 pm.  For more information please call 336-629-0399.
